The Art of Resortwear: How to Choose Quality Fabrics for the Mediterranean Summer

There is something that happens when you arrive somewhere warm and beautiful. You slow down. You stop rushing. You start paying attention to small things — the way the light hits the water in the afternoon, the sound of cicadas, the feel of a cold drink in your hand. And somewhere in all of that, you want to feel good in what you are wearing. Not just look good. Actually feel good.

That is what resortwear is really about. And it starts with fabric.

It Is Not Just About Style

Most of us have made the mistake at least once. We pack something that looked amazing at home, arrive somewhere hot, and by noon we are uncomfortable, sticky, and quietly wishing we had packed differently. The outfit was fine. The fabric was wrong.

In warm climates, what your clothes are made of matters more than almost anything else. A beautiful cut in the wrong material will let you down every time. A simple silhouette in the right fabric will carry you through an entire day — from the beach to lunch to a slow evening walk — without a second thought.

Linen: A Classic For Good Reason

Linen has been keeping people cool in hot climates for thousands of years, and it is not going anywhere. It breathes well, it softens over time, and it has that relaxed, slightly undone quality that feels completely at home by the sea.

People sometimes hesitate because it creases easily. But honestly, that is part of what makes it beautiful. A linen dress or shirt with a few natural folds does not look messy — it looks like someone who knows how to enjoy themselves on holiday. Go for a lighter weave in shirts and cover-ups, and a little more weight in trousers or structured dresses.

Cotton Voile: For When You Want to Feel Like You Are Wearing Almost Nothing

If you have ever worn a cotton voile kaftan on a hot afternoon and felt a breeze move through it, you understand why this fabric has such a devoted following. It is incredibly light, slightly sheer, and moves in a way that heavier fabrics simply cannot match.

It works beautifully over swimwear, layers effortlessly, and has an ease to it that feels genuinely carefree rather than just styled to look that way. It needs a little more care in the wash, but for beach days and long lunches in the shade, nothing quite compares.

TENCEL: Worth Getting to Know

TENCEL is a fabric that more people are discovering, and for good reason. Made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, it is soft, smooth, and much less prone to wrinkling than linen — which makes it a great option if you are travelling and want pieces that stay looking good without much effort.

It has a subtle sheen to it and drapes really well on the body. It is also gentle on skin, which matters when you are spending long days in the sun and heat. If you care about where your clothes come from, it is worth knowing that the production process is also considerably more environmentally friendly than most conventional fabrics.

A Word on What to Avoid

Polyester is the main one to steer clear of when dressing for heat. It traps warmth, does not breathe, and after a few hours in the sun it becomes genuinely unpleasant to wear. The same goes for most synthetic blends that prioritise a low price point over actual wearability.

When you are shopping online, always check the fabric composition. If a brand does not list it, that tells you something. The ones who are proud of their materials will always tell you exactly what is in them.

Clothes That Are Worth Coming Back To

The best holiday pieces are not the ones you buy once and forget. They are the ones that come out every summer, that you have worn in enough good moments that putting them on feels like something. That kind of quality does not happen by accident — it comes from choosing the right fabrics, cut well, made with some care.

At our little shop in Gytheio, down on the southern tip of the Peloponnese, that is exactly what we think about. The heat here is real, the light is extraordinary, and the sea is never far away. We make and choose clothes that belong in this landscape — and that will travel well wherever you decide to take a piece of it with you.
